OnLine English Hints and Tips

Abbreviations
  • Use abbreviations only for terms mentioned four times or more in your paper.
  • Use them consistently throughout the paper.
  • Check whether the journal permits some abbreviations to be used without definition (e.g., DNA).
  • Define abbreviations at first use in both the abstract and text.
  • Once you define an abbreviation, use the abbreviation and not the full term.
